There are still far too few charging stations in Germany for the breakthrough of electric mobility. The solution can be your own charging station. Despite hurdles, the topic is even interesting for users without an electric car.

For Stefan Nakazi of the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center, this is “a sensible solution. You always go back there. The car has enough time to recharge it there. ”

Actually, electric cars can be charged at the normal household socket. “However, we do not recommend this, it should only be an emergency option,” says Nakazi. “Since the charging process takes up to 20 hours, the sockets are put under a lot of stress, which can lead to short circuits and even fires because they are not designed for such applications.”

Wall boxes with 3.7 and 22 kilowatts of power

A remedy is a so-called wall box. “This is an interface between the normal power grid and the charging cable of the electric car,” explains Nakazi. “Instead of 2.4 kilowatts from the household socket, these charging stations offer outputs from 3.7 to 22 kilowatts. Wallboxes take considerably less time to charge than normal sockets.

They can be easily installed in the home garage or on the wall of a house. “You should choose a place where the cable can be easily reached when the car is in front of it,” advises Nakazi. The ADAC recommends the installation of an eleven kilowatt wall box with three current phases for private houses.

A simple wall box is sufficient, according to the ADAC, but there are also models with additional features such as an access restriction, which could make operation more difficult.

Flexible electricity tariffs for wallbox

“Depending on the application, the wallbox should also have a communication interface,” adds Andreas Habermehl from the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Crafts (ZVEH). In the near future there should be flexible electricity tariffs from the energy supplier, with which the e-cars will be automatically charged from the wallbox when the electricity is particularly cheap.

It also makes sense if the wallbox can be integrated into an in-house energy management system, in which, for example, a photovoltaic system and important other consumption points are integrated in the house network. “Then the green electricity generated by the PV system can preferably be used,” explains Habermehl.

Anyone building a new building or modernizing their house today is well advised to make room for a wall box right away, even if they do not yet have an electric car. “It is advisable to lay sufficiently strong empty pipes from the meter cupboard to the space used later in the garage or carport,” advises consumer adviser Nakazi. It is best to lay the cables in it from the outset and then only connect the wallbox later if necessary.

Separately secured circuit necessary

The charging station must always be connected to a separately secured circuit. “The circuit must have a residual current device (FI switch) and may only be installed by an electrical contractor that is registered with a network operator,” explains electrical engineering expert Habermehl. Legislators also require that a wallbox be registered with the network operator.

“Usually, the network operator has nothing against installing a wall box,” says Nakazi. “He has no veto right for devices up to eleven kilowatts, but he does have the right for higher powers. From 12 kilowatts you need the approval of the network operator. “

In multi-family buildings, the installation of a wall box has to overcome another hurdle. “In Germany, the community of owners must agree to the installation of wall boxes – and unanimously,” says an ADAC spokesman. If you want to install a wallbox, you should therefore talk to the co-owners as apartment owners.

Basically, it is possible that neighbors also use the private wallbox in the garage. “But that should remain a pure favor,” advises Nakazi. “If you want to earn money with it, you become an electricity supplier and have to deal with complicated legal and tax regulations. It is a huge effort that is not worth it. “
