No Euro for Ousmane Dembele: the French international winger, operated on Tuesday for a tendon rupture of a thigh, will be unavailable about 6 months, his club in Barcelona announced, confirming the striker’s package for the big continental event scheduled for this summer (12 June-12 July).

Ousmane Dembele has been successfully operated on in Turku (Finland), Barca wrote in a statement, doubting any hope of seeing the world champion restored in time for the Euro: The absence time is estimated at around 6 months.

This downtime is a blow to Dembouz, 22, but it is paradoxically an opportunity for FC Barcelona, which could recruit a medical joker linked to this long-term unavailability if the Spanish federation (RFEF) allows it.

Dembele (9 games, 1 goal this season) injured his right thigh last week after just recovering from a previous thigh injury.

No longer called to the Blues since November 20, 2018 (against Uruguay, in friendly), this explosive winger with fragile health totaled at least six injuries in 2019. He has missed more than sixty official matches since his arrival at Barca in the summer of 2017, and this figure will swell in the coming weeks.

Medical joker at Barca?

He had already suffered a complete rupture of the proximal tendon of the femoral biceps of the left thigh in September 2017, just after his resounding transfer to Barca for 105 million euros (plus bonus). The injury had put him on forced rest for five months.

This setback further complicates the business of Barca, which is having a difficult season. The club had decided not to recruit a striker during the winter transfer window to make up for the absence of Luis Suarez, operated on the right knee on January 12 and absent until mid-May.

It remains to be seen if FC Barcelona will try this time to bring in a reinforcement. This option can only be activated outside transfer periods if a player is absent for more than five months, after RFEF’s evaluation of the medical file. The recruited joker must be playing in Spain or be without a club, and cannot play in European competitions.

As for the Blues, this long unavailability is also a blow: his injury weakened a little more the wings, long orphaned by Florian Thauvin and Kingsley Coman.

In the offensive sector, the drop in form of Jonathan Ikone in Lille and the bad pass of Thomas Lemar begin to limit the options of coach Didier Deschamps, even if he is used to changing Blaise Matuidi, a less offensive profile, and Kylian Mbappe, yet refocused in the club axis with Paris SG.

DD can however still count on Nabil Fekir, regularly called when he was operational, or Anthony Martial, even if he has not worn the blue jersey since March 2018. But the probable loss of Dembele, unpredictable dribbler, could weigh heavy at Euro…
